Versatility Awards

Many members of the English Cocker Spaniel Club of Canada participate with their dogs in a variety of disciplines other than conformation earning CKC titles in many disciplines.
In 2005 a Versatility Award Committee was established by the ECSCC Executive to develop a framework for ECSCC Versatility Awards to encourage the participation of English Cocker Spaniels in Canadian Kennel Club activities and to acknowledge an individual dog's accomplishments and recognize the versatility of the English Cocker Spaniel.
Review of other Breed Club versatility award requirements, showed that the CKC Conformation title was a basic requirement. Clubs reward other accomplishments based on the type of activity and level of proficiencies earned in each discipline e.g. for obedience CD,CDX,UD,UDX etc. The Versatility Award intent is to honour combined accomplishments.
Using these basic concepts, combined with CKC sanctioned event requirements, the Versatility Awards Committee presented a framework for four levels of Versatility to the ECSCC Executive.
In December, 2005 the ECSCC Executive accepted the draft Versatility Award criteria and directed that the Versatility Award Committee distribute the information through the newsletter for general comment by the membership.
The draft Versatility Award was amended based on member comments, and finalized.

ENGLISH COCKER SPANIEL CLUB of CANADA

General Requirements
1) Only titles awarded by the CKC will be considered;
2)The ECSCC Versaltility Award is available to ECSCC members in good standing;
3) The Versatility Dog, Versatility Dog Intermediate, Versatility Dog Excellent and Versality Dog Extradinaire awards are lifetime awards with no time limitations for each individual English Cocker Spaniel;
4) The requirements for each of the above noted awards are listed below:

English Cocker Spaniels like the sport of Scent Hurdle Racing
which seems custom made to their natural scenting abilities, and take to it with great enthusiasm.

Each time a dumbbell is retrieved, the steward places a dumbbell marked with an “X”, in the empty space on the platform so that each dog has to find his own from a choice of four dumbbells.

Accuracy is just as important as speed - the time the dogs spend scenting on the platform is what can separate the winning team from the losing one!

Each dog wears a numbered jacket matching the number on their dumbbell which makes it much easier for the audience, and judge, to verify that the dog has returned with the correct dumbbell.

The first team to successfully complete the course is the winner of that heat. The first team to win two out of three heats is the winner of the race.

For each clean heat run
over 35 seconds the canine team members earn 5 points;
under 35 seconds earns 10 points;
under 30 seconds earns 20 points
towards the following coveted CKC recognized titles:

50 points = Scent Hurdle Dog (SHD)
100 points = Scent Hurdle Dog Excellent (SHDX)
250 points = Scent Hurdle Dog Champion (SHDCh.)
500 points = Scent Hurdle Dog Masters (SHD.M)
1000 points = Scent Hurdle Dog Master’s Excellent (SHDMX)
2500 Scent Hurdle Dog Masters Champion (SHDMCh)
